About
Rowan Fullerton
Rowan Fullerton is a British portrait painter whose work is rooted in observation from life. Born in Brighton in 2004. Her practice centres around portrait painting, but includes charcoal drawing and still life. She currently divides her time between Florence, London and Gloucestershire.
Training
Charles H. Cecil Studios
Rowan trained at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, where she studied the traditional sight-size method, following the old masters traditions of John Singer Sargent, Rubens Van Dyke, Velasquez and Titian. The closest line of teaching being taught by the artist taught by an associate of Sargent.
Approach
The sight-size tradition
This method is the sight-size tradition.
The sight-size method is where you line the canvas next to the sitter and observe from multiple distances to achieve a natural breath of focus and visual impression. This achieves a very different effect compared to copying from a photograph because one is viewing the sitter’s impression and character as seen by an artist's eye over time rather than a detailed and distorted one second photo.
